While shaving and waxing are both popular hair removal methods, the biggest difference with Laser Hair Removal is that it can remove hair permanently from the body. Even the FDA states that laser hair removal is effective with long lasting results! There are five major benefits to Laser Hair Removal. First of all, laser hair removal is precise. The laser only targets pigmented areas on the skin, such as the hair follicle. This is why only the hair follicle is burned and not the skin surrounding the area. How does laser hair removal work? The hair on our body grows in three stages: anagen, telogen and catagen. Laser hair removal is most effective on the hairs in the early part of the anagen stage, when hair is actively growing. A concentrated beam of light (the laser) is aimed at the hair follicle. The laser than converts its energy into heat, heats up the hair follicle and prevents that follicle from growing any further. Secondly, laser hair removal has been proven to be extremely effective. Hair removal lasers have been in use since 1997 and have been approved for “permanent hair reduction” in the United States by the FDA. According to the FDA, “permanent hair reduction” is defined as being the long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs regrowing after a treatment regime.
Laser hair removal will permanently reduce body hair, but there’s no scientific proof that it can permanently remove ALL body hair. For Laser Hair Removal treatments to be the most effective, the hair being removed needs to be caught in the early part of the anagen stage, when the hair is actively growing. This is why it is so important to receive laser hair removal in a series of consecutive treatments, every 4 to 6 weeks. Most clients report that after a series of sessions, there’s a significant reduction in the amount of body hair that grows back. The hair that does grow back tends to be sparse, fine and lighter in color.
In a society where time is money, clients are always looking for ways to knock things off of their To-Do list faster. Laser hair removal removes hair at the speed of light, literally. The laser is designed to treat several hairs in a large surface area, all at the same time. Depending on the area being treated, laser hair removal services can take anywhere from one minute, 15 minutes to a half hour for larger body areas. There’s no downtime after the service. There’s no sticky residue left behind. When it comes to laser hair removal, the pain factor varies from person-to-person because everyone’s pain tolerance is different. Laser hair removal has been described as feeling like a gentle pinch or like the snap of a warm rubber band. Also, the pain factor will depend on the area of the body that is being treated. Some areas of the body are more sensitive for clients than others. Some clients even say that one side of the body tends to be more sensitive than the other. Most clients do agree that waxing is far more painful than laser hair removal.
Can Laser Hair Removal reduce ingrown hairs? It certainly can! Ingrown hair commonly shows up in areas of the body that have been shaved or waxed. They’re caused when the hair is broken off unevenly with a sharp tip. With laser hair removal, clients have less of a chance of getting ingrown hair because they aren’t shaving or waxing. Plus, when hair does grow back after a laser hair removal treatment, the hair tends to be sparse and fine. The change in hair texture reduces the chance of having ingrown hairs even more.
